Nortriptyline increase dosage, or switch to a different antipsychotic drug. The risk for development of withdrawal symptoms is greater in patients who are taking multiple drugs. It is important to use an alternative medication for these patients. For patients being treated with a benzodiazepine, it is important to continue taking the benzodiazepine at highest dose that is clinically tolerable. In many cases, patients do well on a lower dose of benzodiazepine. For patients who are being treated with a non-benzodiazepine antipsychotic, there is no risk of withdrawal when changing to a different antipsychotic.
