Poetry of Robert E. Kogan — Poems of Life, Love & Social Commentary

Julie & Lisa

My dad wrote this poem to read at our wedding in 1998.

Becoming United As Two

(for Lisa and David)

Standing at the alter of life

Two yesterdays shed all their sorrow.

Leaving behind days that have passed,

Together, they discover tomorrow.

As separate fibers blend into one cord

The vows they both offer now make

A festival consisting of

Dessert ideas and wedding cakes.

Together they create a home –

A home more a concept than place –

For home is now built on their love,

Where ever they touch or embrace.

No longer content on just being one,

They pledge to start life anew

Sharing all their tomorrows together;

Becoming united as two.

Like father, like daughter...

Our dad is not the only member of our family to have the writer's gift. My sister, Julie (Kogan) Davis is also an accomplished writer and poet. This was the first poem she ever wrote. She was 9 years old and living in Guam.

Cry of the Birds

Sad cry,

Long cry,

Lonely and wild is the cry of the birds,

Is the cry of the birds.

They swoop and tear

Flock and follow

Hundreds

Thousands.

Who are they following?

Why?

Sometimes,

Just before they dive and scream

Their wings touch the sun

That’s when I like them best

That’s when I love them most.

Sad cry,

Long cry,

Lonely and wild is the cry of the birds.
